Power is Me by Jewel Harris

Power is an interesting concept. It’s defined as our ability to do something or act in a particular way. I choose to leverage power to encourage me to love who I am today in the pursuit of who I desire to be tomorrow.

I feel more powerful when I wake up at 4:30 in the morning. I feel like I have an advantage in life when I wake up before the rest of my household. I get to spend as much time as I want on self care items, like my skincare routine. I get to take care of any household chores that weren’t completed the night before and I even journal or plan out my day during these hours. I feel more powerful when I join the workout zoom sessions with my family. I look into my backroom closet and feel more powerful when I realize that I've accumulated my own home gym. Some of my equipment includes; dumbbells, free weights, a lifting bar, mats, a weighted vest, and ankle weights.

I feel more powerful when I wake my soon-to-be 1 year old up at 6:45 AM for her to sit on the potty. I feel more powerful when I sing good morning to her in Spanish and Russian and she laughs and smiles at me. I feel more powerful after my church has their group prayers in the morning. I feel powerful when I make breakfast and a warm cup of coffee. I don’t even like coffee, I just like to smell it. The smell of the coffee gives me power to feel productive in my work tasks. Little things in life help increase my faith in my own ability to do something or act in a particular way. I can believe, because my preparation and daily tasks reiterate the development of the woman I am hoping to become. I am powerful. I am power. Power is me.

These are ways that I choose to purposefully empower myself, all before 12:00 PM. Choosing power may seem difficult when the world makes you feel powerless, or when society defines power as something contrary to what your daily life may look like or consist of. But I hope these examples show you that you too can be empowered by your own choices. I encourage you to leverage your power on this day as you strive towards who you desire to be tomorrow.
